2023 Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) Certificate Award Ceremony and GIAHS Exhibition

Since 2018, 24 new GIAHS in 12 countries have been designated. They represent not only stunning natural landscapes but also agricultural practices that create livelihoods in rural areas while combining biodiversity, resilient ecosystems, tradition and innovation.

On May 22 2023, representatives from the new sites will gather at FAO Headquarters to receive their certificates and present their agricultural heritage systems to the world.

The Objectives of this event are to:

  • Deliver official GIAHS certificates to new GIAHS sites located in: Brazil (1), China (4), Ecuador (2), Iran (2), Italy (2), Japan (2), Korea (2), Mexico (1), Morocco (2), Spain (3), Thailand (1) and Tunisia (2).
  • Review all newly designated GIAHS sites and foster exchange on the issues, challenges and future plans, for the conservation and development of the sites.
  • Raise awareness on the GIAHS programme and the importance of the conservation of biodiversity, traditional knowledge, ecological practices and cultures in FAO member countries.

The Certificate Award Ceremony, with interpretation into 6 languages, will include:

  • A High-level session where ministers from GIAHS countries representing all regions will make keynote speeches.
  • The Certificate Award Ceremony where representatives from new GIAHS sites will receive official GIAHS certificates from the FAO Director General.
  • Presentations of the new sites.
Exhibits and events run by representatives of the GIAHS sites will take place in the FAO Atrium from 22 to 23 May 2023. Exhibits organized by the GIAHS secretariat will continue until May 26. An immersive experience will take place in FAO’s Flag room.
